Algalita: Giant Sea Bass
Project Goal
$75,000.00

Description of the problem:

Huge Giant Sea Bass are being documented in California waters. But researchers are uncertain of the species future due to contamination of the food chain. Giant Sea Bass are bottom feeders. Due to the high levels DDT & PCB imbedded in benthic sediments off Palos Verdes, fish that are bottom feeders in the region risk contamination. Does this lead to reproductive problems relative to the stereolepsis gigas species? AMRF divers have witnessed and filmed Giant Sea bass adults of perhaps 400 pounds, but the juveniles are not seen or filmed and they should be plentiful, if there is a true recovery.

Description of the project / solution:

AMRF divers have documented adult Giant Sea Bass off the CA coast, but are as yet to photograph juveniles. Perhaps the divers are looking in the wrong habitats. A study should be done with sport fishing catches to identify where the juvenile Giant Sea Bass are most landed. In a follow-up photo study, AMRF divers with cameras can target these areas in hopes of documenting the offspring.

Amount that Channel G seeks to raise in order to help the organization achieve its goals:

$25,000 will create a fund for landing studies and diving vessel expenses. A sum of $ 25,000 to produce a 20 minute educational outreach program.  Also,   $ 25,000 to support additional research by the Pfleger Institute of Environmental Science, in Oceanside.    Total amount to raise: $ 75,000.00.

Other support needed by the project:

Looking for sills and videos of Giant Sea Bass, stereolepsis gigas adults and juveniles in situ.
