Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center
Description of the problem:CWWC is a 35 acre sanctuary and a permanent home to 17 wolves, 2 coyotes, and 9 foxes. The mission of CWWC is to care for the permanent residents at CWWC and to educate the public about the threats facing wolves, coyotes, foxes and other animals in the wild and in captivity killed for sport or for fur. CWWC is at-capacity with the number of animals living at the sanctuary so it no longer serves as a rescue facility. CWWC often receives up to 5 inquiries a day from people who have identified a wolf, wolf-dog, coyote, or fox as needing to be rescued. Most inquiries are from people who thought having a wolf-dog puppy would be fun, only to later learn that, while socialized to humans, some cannot be domesticated and are wild and unmanageable when full grown. Because CWWC could not fill this need as a rescue facility, it decided to educate the public of wolf/coyote/fox issues through tours of the sanctuary, public programs, and school visits. Description of the project / solution:There are three aspects to the CWWC education message: 1) wolves and dogs should not be bred; 2) wolves, coyotes, and foxes face multiple threats in the wild, most particularly loss of habitat due to housing and shopping developments; and 3) killing wolves, coyotes, and foxes for sport or fur is inhumane and should be made strictly illegal. The most profound way CWWC educates is through tours of the sanctuary. When people have the opportunity to observe wolves, coyotes, and foxes in close proximity, they quickly and easily acquire a whole new understanding of the magnificence of these creatures and their natural instinct is to want to do something to protect them from human exploitation. As an outreach program, CWWC brings a wolf-dog hybrid who is temperamentally calm and easy going into schools to bring the wolf experience directly to young people. CWWC also offers full moon hikes to experience, perhaps as the only time in a person’s life, the mystery of wolves howling at the moon. Amount that Channel G seeks to raise in order to help the organization achieve its goals:CWWC must raise at least $5,000 a month just to keep the lights on and the wolves, coyotes and foxes fed. Channel G’s fund raising goal for CWWC is $25,000 in support of its basic operations.
